Wethersfield, CT: On November 15, Connecticut-based nonprofit Circle of Care hosted a unique Thanksgiving event for children with cancer and their families, marking its 5th annual event in the Hartford region. Held at the historic Webb Deane Stevens Barn, the organization’s Thanksgathering welcomed 30 families for a day of community, comfort, and much-needed support as they prepare for the holiday season.
For many families in this area, Thanksgathering is the only holiday event specifically designed to be safe for children who are immunocompromised—and one of the few opportunities they have to gather outside the hospital. Circle of Care provides comprehensive non-medical support for all Connecticut families facing pediatric cancer, filling an essential gap for families who can often feel unseen in the day-to-day realities of treatment. The need for assistance continues to grow. While medical treatment dominates a family’s time and financial resources, rising grocery costs and inflation have made it even harder for families to manage basic needs at home. Around 70% of families with a child in cancer treatment experience a financial crisis, and food insecurity is one of the most immediate challenges they face.
This year, families attending Thanksgathering received bags filled with groceries and gift cards to provide a full Thanksgiving meal at home. More than half of all Circle of Care families received food support this year, and over 10% of the organization's financial assistance went toward helping families pay for meals—reflecting how essential this support has become.
Beyond the practical help, the event offered something families say they need just as much: connection. Many met others who understand their journey, some for the first time outside hospital walls. Children enjoyed crafts and activities, and families participated in a holiday card contest. One parent shared: "This event will hold a very special place in my heart… Witnessing how much love, care, and support a group of individuals is willing to pour into families that are in so much need… We would love for [our daughter] to be a bigger part of this great community and to meet and connect with other kiddos that are going through similar experiences."
