WILLIMANTIC, Conn. — For teenagers facing cancer, having a space that feels like their own can become especially meaningful during a time when so much of life feels uncertain.
Thanks to Circle of Care's Art From the Heart program and a dedicated team of volunteers from The Hartford led by Alyssa Ostergren and Taylor Benedum, that became a reality for Willimantic resident Felix, who is preparing to begin college this fall.
Designed around Felix's love of fashion, art, music, and bold design, the room was transformed into a vibrant, boutique-inspired retreat where he can display the clothing, artwork, and collectibles that reflect his personality. Every detail was thoughtfully chosen to create a space that celebrates who he is outside of his cancer journey.
More than just a bedroom makeover, the project created a space where Felix could express himself while preparing for an exciting new chapter in his life.
Following the reveal, Felix described the transformation as "a room that lets me be who I am."
His mother said the volunteers took Felix's ideas and "brought them to life," adding that the experience had "a profound impact" on his well-being. Seeing his excitement during the reveal, she said, was one of the most memorable moments for their family.
The Hartford team worked closely with Felix throughout the design process, creating a highly personalized space that reflected his vision while completing the entire transformation in a single day.
Circle of Care's Art From the Heart program creates personalized dream bedrooms for children and young adults with cancer throughout Connecticut. Each makeover is thoughtfully designed around the child's interests and personality, creating a comforting retreat away from the stress of treatment while giving families a place to rest, heal, and be together.
