Showing Up, Mile by Mile, for Families Facing Childhood Cancer

This past December, even heavy wind gusts and freezing rain couldn’t stop Cassie Robotti from running—for this was no ordinary run. Cassie ran a total of 46 miles over 46 hours from December 18–20 to honor her good friend Kyle Bancroft, who lost his battle to cancer in 2024 at just 19 years old. A junior at Penn State and a Stamford resident, Cassie took on this challenge as a call to action in the fight against childhood cancer, while raising much-needed funds for Circle of Care to help other families going through what Kyle’s family faced.

Cassie and Kyle met in 8th grade and developed a strong friendship during their years at Stamford High School, where Kyle became the school’s star first baseman. When Kyle was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma in 2020, Cassie—and the entire community—rallied behind him, including Circle of Care, which supported Kyle and his family throughout his treatment. Cassie got the idea for the run from a mutual friend and chose 46 miles over 46 hours in recognition of THON, the annual dance marathon at Penn State, where participants stand and dance for 46 hours straight—a symbol of standing with families for as long as it takes, because childhood cancer doesn’t clock out.

As Cassie ran through the wintry weekend in Stamford, she faced challenges beyond the weather. As a Type 1 diabetic, she needed to monitor and adjust her blood sugar levels constantly, and at mile 36, she felt her knee give out. Still, she pushed through—periodically looking at a photo of Kyle on her phone to give her strength. A caring friend joined Cassie for the final 10-mile stretch, running alongside her until the end. On the morning of December 20, Cassie completed her 46th mile.

“I felt accomplished. I’ve never done anything like this before,” Cassie shared. “It was so rewarding doing this for Kyle and his family—but also for all the other families facing pediatric cancer.” Cassie plans to pursue a career as an athletic trainer after college.

Cassie’s determination and spirit are an inspiration, reminding us that there are many ways to show up for families facing childhood cancer. To date, Cassie has raised $2,400 in support of her incredible tribute to Kyle and his family. You can still donate to help her reach her goal of $2,750 here:
