Declan's Keynote Speech
2024 Education Award Reception
For those who don’t know me, my name is Declan Ratner, and I have the pleasure of speaking to you today about my journey.
Currently, I am a rising sophomore at Sacred Heart University, and my younger sister will also be joining me next year. I’ve enrolled in the dual degree PA program, taking the typical four-year bachelor’s degree route and then going off to get my master’s degree in Physician Assistance studies.
Aside from my academics, I am also a student orientation leader this fall for the incoming freshmen, where I help freshmen adjust to life in college just as my peers helped me. Helping others has truly become a passion of mine. Over the years, I’ve been inspired by those who touched my life during my treatment, just like the Circle of Care.
At three and a half years old, I was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. My world, like many others, felt like it was flipped upside down, however, with the help of organizations like Circle of Care, the treatment was made more bearable with things like gift bags and check ins. Even more remarkable is that this wonderful organization has grown tremendously, touching all walks of life, as I saw at their annual 5K this past May in Wilton. It was incredible to be a part of that this year, and for the first time… and I’m also looking forward to next year!
As we all know, college is expensive. I cannot stress enough how thankful I am to be a second-year recipient of this award. I can promise it will be put to good use, just as it was last year. As I work to pursue my goal of being on the front lines of healthcare, I will forever remember and be thankful for those who were able to get me there. Thank you.
